Germany warns Russia of consequences if Putin no show to Istanbul talks
Germany has issued a strong warning to Russia ahead of planned Ukraine-Russia peace talks in Istanbul, urging Moscow to show up or face further consequences.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) stressed the importance of the May 15 meeting, calling it a key opportunity to move toward ending the war in Ukraine, Caliber.Az writes per foreign media.
“Russia must not leave an empty chair there; Russia must appear if it is seriously interested in peace,” he said.
If Russia does not accept Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's offer of talks, Wadephul threatened Moscow with further steps. In this case, "there will also be consequences," said the CDU politician, adding: "We will not tolerate Russia simply continuing this war."
The latest ceasefire proposal, backed by European leaders including Germany’s Friedrich Merz, called for a 30-day unconditional halt to hostilities. But on May 12, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the appeal, calling the "ultimatum language" unacceptable and offering no clear conditions under which Russia would agree to pause the fighting.
Instead, President Vladimir Putin proposed direct peace talks with Ukraine in Istanbul. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is prepared to meet Putin and talk to him directly on May 15.
Türkiye has offered to host the negotiations and is committed to supporting the peace process and the reconstruction of Ukraine.
