Have researchers found a second Sphinx in Egypt?
Italian researchers claim that radar scans have revealed a large underground structure beneath a sand-covered hill on the Giza Plateau, featuring vertical shafts and horizontal tunnels. Expedition leader Filippo Biondi said he is roughly 80% confident that the site may contain a second Sphinx, a counterpart to the famous statue. Supporters of the theory also point to the ancient “Dream Stele” placed between the paws of the first Sphinx, which depicts what appears to be two sculptures.
However, archaeologists and experts remain sceptical. No excavations have been conducted, and no peer-reviewed studies support the claim. Former Egyptian Antiquities Minister Zahi Hawass called such reports “baseless,” noting that the plateau has been extensively studied and nothing of the sort has been found.
Specialists also caution that ground-penetrating radar cannot reliably detect detailed objects deep within dense limestone. Most scholars interpret the images on the Dream Stele symbolically rather than as an exact map of hidden structures.
