Hungarian FM Szijjártó sees Trump win as key to ending Ukraine conflict

06 November 2024 16:36

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó has voiced high hopes for peace in Ukraine after Donald Trump’s victory in the US presidential election, calling it an opportunity for renewed cooperation.

Posting on Facebook, Szijjártó emphasized that Hungary anticipates US-Hungary relations "getting back on track" given the countries’ shared perspectives on critical issues like peace, immigration, and family values, Caliber.Az reports.

“There is a better chance than ever that after almost a thousand days, peace will finally reign again in Ukraine!” Szijjártó stated, expressing optimism for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Republican Donald Trump claimed victory with a minimum of 270 electoral votes, according to counts from The New York Times and Reuters, which put Trump’s electoral votes at 277 and 279, respectively. His opponent, Kamala Harris, secured between 219 and 224 votes. CNN and NBC also projected Trump’s win, both giving him 276 votes. The deciding state of Wisconsin tipped Trump over the required threshold.

The formal Electoral College vote will occur on December 17, with Congress certifying the results on January 6. Trump’s inauguration as the 47th US president is set for January 20, alongside his vice president-elect, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance.

Speaking to supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in Florida, Trump celebrated the victory as a “political triumph” that America “has never seen before.” He promised to “heal” the nation, reduce taxes, and “stop wars,” emphasizing the uniqueness of his electoral win.

“We’ve achieved the most incredible political thing, political victory, that our country has never seen before — nothing like this,” he declared, while expressing gratitude to his supporters and family, including his wife Melania, whom he referred to as the “First Lady” once again. He noted that the American people had given him a “strong mandate,” pointing to his wide-reaching support across key states.
