Hungary: Eight killed in chain-reaction motorway crashes
As many as eight people have been killed and two others injured in a series of crashes on a motorway in western Hungary, police have said.
Seven people died early on Friday (June 12) when a minibus carrying nine passengers crashed into a truck that was stationary in traffic caused by an earlier accident on the M1 motorway, Caliber.Az reports via British media.
The collision took place near Győr, about 122 km west of Budapest.
Police said the traffic congestion had formed after a separate crash in the same area, in which a truck collided with a construction vehicle, leaving one person dead.
Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said in a Facebook post that the victims were foreign nationals.
"I express my sincere condolences to the families," he said.
Magyar did not specify the nationality of the victims, and police said they were still working to confirm details. However, the news site 24.hu reported that all of the victims were men and that both the minibus and one of the trucks involved carried Moldovan licence plates.
