Hungary's Orban opposes von der Leyen's EU Commission presidency
Diplomatic sources in Brussels claim Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban opposed Ursula von der Leyen's candidacy for the presidency of the European Commission during the EU summit.
Orban reportedly supported former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa for the European Council presidency and chose to abstain from voting on Estonian Prime Minister Kai Kallas as EU diplomacy chief, Caliber.Az echoes Hungarian media.
Media reports assert that Orban adhered to his recent position, arguing that accepting the proposed deal, especially von der Leyen's nomination, would deceive European voters who had favoured right-wing parties in the recent European Parliament elections. Therefore, Orban voted against von der Leyen, supported Costa, and abstained from voting on Kallas' candidacy.
