Slovak PM summons emergency meeting over threats of coup attempt by "foreign experts"

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is summoning an emergency meeting of the National Security Council following the emergence of intelligence reports warning of attempts to conduct a coup involving "foreign experts" that have previously been involved in Georgia and Ukraine.

According to the Slovak Dennik N portal, the prime minister stated he is prepared for any scenario but vowed that the country "will not be overthrown," Caliber.Az reports. 

Fico warns that these "foreign experts", which he accuses have been participating in the coloured revolutions in Georgia and Ukraine, have already arrived in Slovakia. He expressed his concerns that they might attempt to overthrow the legitimate government through street protests and the occupation of administrative buildings.

As the article states, the meeting of the Security Council is scheduled for 9:00 AM on January 23, with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini also set to attend.

This development comes shortly after Slovakia's opposition parties withdrew their parliamentary no-confidence motion aiming to dismiss the prime minister's cabinet on January 21. They have been accusing Fico of preparing the exit of Slovakia from the European Union. 

The political climate remains tense in Slovakia, as Fico has recently faced criticism from European neighbours for condemning Ukraine's decision to halt Russian gas supplies in December 2024. The small EU country heavily depends on Russian energy sources and has previously voiced concerns about Ukraine's handling of the war. The government has halted official military aid to Kyiv, sparking a rift with Ukraine, EU leaders and Slovakia's opposition parties.
