Mexican leader asserts nation’s rights on migration, trade, and the Gulf
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has reaffirmed her commitment to defending Mexico’s sovereignty and supporting Mexican citizens abroad in response to US President Donald Trump's policies on migration and trade.
“Let the people of Mexico be assured that we will always defend our sovereignty and will always support our compatriots,” Sheinbaum declared during a daily press conference, Caliber.Az reports referring to international media.
She addressed Trump’s controversial executive orders, emphasizing the importance of adhering to legal frameworks. “It is important to always keep a cool head and focus on signed decrees, not speeches. Under the law, the executive orders signed by Trump are valid,” Sheinbaum explained.
She highlighted the implications of the "Remain in Mexico" program, introduced by Trump in 2018, which requires asylum seekers in the US to remain in Mexico while their cases are processed. “This policy means they cannot stay in our country [while the necessary formalities are completed], but we provide them with humanitarian support,” Sheinbaum said. She also noted that Mexico would continue to seek “coordination and cooperation” with the US while adhering to legal boundaries.
Commenting on Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” Sheinbaum expressed firm opposition. “What corresponds to the continental shelf of the United States, they call the Gulf of America. For us and the world, it is still the Gulf of Mexico,” she stated.
Sheinbaum reiterated Mexico’s commitment to upholding its sovereignty, protecting its citizens, and maintaining its stance on international disputes. “We stand firm in defending our principles and our identity,” she concluded.
