Hungary to receive EU funds previously blocked by Brussels
Peter Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party and the incoming prime minister of Hungary, has announced an upcoming agreement with the European Commission that would allow Budapest to access frozen funds from the EU budget and special funds.
On April 29, Magyar met European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels. According to him, the talks were “constructive and productive”.
“We agreed that, in my capacity as Prime Minister of Hungary, I will return to Brussels after May 25 and we will sign a political agreement that Hungary and the Hungarian people need in order to contribute as soon as possible to EU resources worth billions of forints,” Magyar said on his Facebook page.
The deal concerns trillions of forints, including funds from the post-pandemic Recovery Fund, which must be accessed by August 31, otherwise several billion euros could be lost.
Magyar stressed that his government will comply with all European Commission requirements — from strengthening democracy and the rule of law to combating corruption.
According to various estimates, Hungary could be eligible for up to €35 billion.
