Hungary vows to stay in EU, but criticizes Brussels for double standards
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has stated that his country has no intention of leaving the European Union.
Szijjártó, emphasized Hungary’s commitment to remaining a member of the EU while asserting the country’s desire to actively participate in shaping the future of the union, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“We are a member of the European Union and will remain so,” Szijjártó said, responding to questions about Hungary’s potential exit from the EU.
“Nevertheless, we retain the right to participate in the debate on what Europe should be in the future.”
The minister, however, did not shy away from expressing his criticism of the EU's leadership. He accused Brussels of applying double standards and hypocrisy in its treatment of Hungary, which he described as a conservative and patriotic government that has been both successful and long-standing.
In his remarks, Szijjártó pointed to the EU’s history of imposing financial sanctions on Hungary and exerting political pressure on Hungarian officials, framing these actions as part of an ongoing tension between Budapest and the Brussels establishment.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Szijjártó, following Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, has declared that Budapest will block the next extension of EU sanctions against Russia unless Ukraine "refrains from measures that harm Hungary’s energy security".
Szijjártó reiterated Hungary’s long-standing opposition to sanctions against Russia, asserting that they should be lifted "as soon as possible" and threatening to veto the next renewal of sanctions if Ukraine continues actions that allegedly compromise Hungary’s energy security.
