India deploys more troops in Jammu to check Pakistani infiltration
The Indian Border Security Force (BSF) has deployed two additional battalions, comprising over 2,000 personnel, to the Jammu region.
This strategic reinforcement aims to counter increasing infiltration attempts and terrorist activities, and to secure vulnerable stretches along the international border (IB) with Pakistan before the challenging winter season sets in, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Officials disclosed that the new units have been stationed in "depth areas," forming a critical "second line of defence" behind the BSF’s primary border deployment. These battalions were recently reallocated from anti-Naxal operations in Odisha's Koraput and Malkangiri districts.
Deployment details
The additional troops have been positioned in and around the Samba district and other sensitive areas in the Jammu region. Security has also been strengthened along parts of Punjab's border adjoining Jammu. These locations, known for dense forests, rugged mountainous terrain, and cross-border tunnels, have been frequent targets for infiltration and militant activities.
The deployment is supported by enhanced surveillance infrastructure, including CCTV cameras, to monitor movement along the IB. Efforts to establish temporary and permanent operational bases and patrolling posts are ongoing to support the new personnel effectively.
Rising security concerns
The decision to bolster defences comes amid a spike in terrorist incidents in Jammu's Rajouri, Poonch, Reasi, Udhampur, Kathua, and Doda districts. Over 40 lives, including 18 security personnel and Village Defence Guard (VDG) members, have been lost in attacks this year alone. Security forces, however, have successfully neutralized several terrorists during operations in 2024.
Strategic importance
The Jammu region's 485 km stretch of the IB, part of the BSF's larger responsibility of guarding over 2,289 km along India’s western border, poses unique challenges due to its topography. Strengthened border management is seen as critical in thwarting Pakistan-based terrorist groups from exploiting these vulnerabilities.
This redeployment underscores India’s commitment to maintaining robust border security and safeguarding its citizens amidst persistent threats from across the border.
