India’s top diplomat: Global community expects resolution of Ukraine crisis
Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has stated that the international community expects a resolution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that the consequences of the war have been felt not only by the primary parties involved but by nations worldwide.
Addressing a conference organized by Indian media, Jaishankar pointed out that the world is witnessing significant exhaustion over the situation, as the conflict’s far-reaching effects have taken a toll on global stability, Caliber.Az reports.
He noted that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had recently held a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking the first direct communication between the two leaders since the conflict started.
“So you can see in which direction the world is moving. I think the world is kind of exhausted. I mean, a huge price has been paid for this conflict, not only by the protagonists, but by everybody else. Now is the time when there is a global demand for some kind of solution,” Jaishankar underlined.
The minister also touched on India's role in the ongoing efforts to mediate a resolution, explaining that while New Delhi has not proposed a formal peace plan, it is committed to facilitating dialogue between Ukraine and Russia. “We don’t think it is our business to offer a peace plan,” he said. “Our business is to try to find a way to bring these two countries to a point where they can engage, because at the end of the day, they have to engage with each other. Others cannot solve the problem if they don’t want to solve the problem.”
The foreign minister acknowledged that India's early efforts to engage both Moscow and Kyiv had initially met with skepticism. However, he pointed out that over time, more countries, including Western nations, have supported India's approach. “Over time, more and more countries, including Western countries, have asked us to go ahead with it. We see the benefit in it,” the Indian top diplomat said.
