Tragedy in Finland: MP commits suicide in Parliament building
On August 19, a member of Finland’s Parliament died by suicide inside the legislative building, according to the Helsinki Police Department.
“On Tuesday, a person died in the Parliament building. The call to the police came through the Emergency Response Centre at 11:06 a.m.,” the police said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Finnish media.
Police have indicated that there is no suspicion of foul play at this stage. Several police patrols and emergency medical services are on site.
Parliament Security Director Aaro Toivonen declined to confirm to the media whether the deceased was a parliament member or staff, or whether the death was accidental. However, he did not dispute a report by Iltalehti suggesting that a member of Parliament took their own life inside the building.
Iltalehti noted that the identity of the deceased parliamentarian is known but will not be released until the family has been notified.
