Indian student turned soldier in Russian army surrenders to Ukraine VIDEO
Ukrainian troops have captured a 22-year-old Indian national who had been serving in the Russian military.
The young man, identified as Majoti, told Ukrainian forces that he had originally travelled to Russia as a university student, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
He said he became embroiled in drug-related legal issues and, to avoid a potential seven-year prison sentence, signed up for military service.
Majoti claimed he was promised that he would serve for one year before being allowed to return home. He described undergoing 16 days of training at a military range in September, learning how to handle weapons, fire a rifle, and throw grenades.
He said that four days ago, he was moved to a so-called “green zone,” and the following day his unit began an assault, covering more than three kilometres and preparing to dig a trench.
He recounted: “I had to run. I told my commander I didn’t want to continue because I was exhausted, my legs and heart were hurting. We had a conflict, and he told others: ‘Take his radio and let him go.’”
Majoti said his radio was taken and his unit dispersed. After walking 2–3 kilometres, he encountered a Ukrainian trench. He insists that he never intended to fight and had planned to escape at the first opportunity, surrendering to Ukrainian forces during the initial assault.
