Indonesia seeks expanded nuclear energy cooperation with Russia, FM says
Indonesia is seeking to deepen cooperation with Russia in the field of nuclear energy as part of efforts to achieve energy self-sufficiency in the coming years, Foreign Minister Sugiono has said.
Sugiono said Russia’s experience in nuclear technology provides a strong basis for potential collaboration between the two countries, ANTARA reports.
“Russia’s extensive experience in this field provides a solid foundation for cooperation,” he said.
He added, however, that any future partnership would need to include technology transfer, the training of Indonesian specialists, and strict adherence to international nuclear safety standards.
Sugiono also highlighted broader strategic priorities, calling for stronger cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia in order to reduce the risk of fragmentation in global supply chains.
He said stable access to food and energy supplies is essential to protect Southeast Asia from external economic shocks. The foreign minister noted Russia’s role as a major global exporter of energy resources, wheat, and fertilisers, saying it contributes to the stability of supply to ASEAN markets.
