Iran calls for accountability over Western sanctions impact

Iran's Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has asserted that the US and its Western allies bear responsibility for the extensive harm caused by sanctions imposed on Iran.

Bagheri Kani made these comments during a session of the UN Security Council, Caliber.Az reports citing the Russian media.

"The US and its Western allies, who have intensified sanctions, must be held accountable for the immense suffering, loss of life, and devastation inflicted on those affected by these sanctions, including my nation," he added.

Bagheri Kani also expressed strong opposition to US President Joe Biden's proposed plan to resolve the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

He criticised the US for its role as a mediator, arguing that its supply of lethal weapons to Israel undermines its impartiality.

"We do not consider the US an honest mediator on issues related to Palestine and Gaza," Bagheri Kani stated.

He pointed out that the US is the biggest supplier of lethal weapons to Israel, accusing the US of causing extensive harm to innocent civilians in Gaza and Palestine.

Bagheri Kani suggested that a genuine commitment to mediation from the US would involve ceasing arms shipments to Israel.
