Israel transports Turkish-US activist’s body to Azerbaijan
The body of Turkish citizen Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, who was killed by Israeli forces during a peaceful demonstration in the occupied West Bank, has been transported from Tel Aviv, Israel to Baku, Azerbaijan.
Eygi's body was handed over to Türkiye's ambassador to Azerbaijan Cahit Bagci and embassy staff at Heydar Aliyev International Airport. The body, wrapped in the Turkish flag, was then flown to Istanbul via a Turkish Airlines flight, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
On September 6, Israeli soldiers opened fire on participants of a peaceful demonstration in support of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. Among the demonstrators was Turkish-American activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, who suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, Eygi could not be saved despite the doctors' efforts. Eygi was a volunteer human rights activist with the International Solidarity Movement, an organisation known for its nonviolent protests against the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
This movement also included US citizen Rachel Corrie, who was killed by an Israeli armoured bulldozer in 2003. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the killing of Aysenur Ezgi Eygi and emphasised that Ankara would continue making efforts on all platforms to hold Israel accountable for crimes against humanity.
