Media: Latvia, Lithuania consider halting Russian grain transit via ports

05 September 2026 10:09

Latvia and Lithuania are considering stopping the transit of Russian grain through their ports amid a shift in Russian export routes toward the Baltic Sea, Russian media reports.

The Latvian government is due to meet on September 8 to discuss a possible complete ban on the export of Russian grain through the country.

Russian grain exporters have increasingly turned to Baltic ports after disruptions to Black Sea and Sea of Azov shipping caused by the war in Ukraine. Reuters earlier reported that requests for rail shipments to Russian Baltic ports had reached 5 million metric tons by August 18, highlighting the growing importance of alternative routes.
