Kazakhstan approves $1.9 billion power plant in Kurchatov

05 September 2026 15:48

Kazakhstan has approved an investment agreement for the construction of a 700-MW condensing power plant in Kurchatov, Abai Region, with the project valued at 881 billion tenge, or about $1.9 billion.

The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Energy and Kurchatov GRES LLP, according to Zakon.kz. The relevant government resolution was signed by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov. The latest government announcement confirms the 881 billion tenge project cost and the planned 700-MW capacity.

The plant will consist of two 350-MW power units, which are scheduled to be commissioned in stages by 2032. Once fully operational, the facility is expected to generate up to 5 billion kWh of electricity annually and create about 4,400 jobs.

The plant will be equipped with modern steam-power equipment and will use clean-coal technologies. The project also provides for gas-cleaning, emissions-filtration and dust-suppression systems designed to meet environmental requirements.
