Bayraktar Akinci UAV scores precision hit with KUZGUN-SS munition VIDEO

12 September 2024 17:59

The Bayraktar Akinci heavy strike UAV has successfully struck a target during a recent test with the KUZGUN-SS (Free Planning) munition, developed by TUBITAK SAGE.

This update was shared by SavunmaSanayiST.com on social media platform X, Caliber.Az reports.

The Defence Industry Department's project, focusing on integrating new munitions and locally produced systems into the Bayraktar Akinci, is progressing successfully.

The KUZGUN-SS is a tractionless munition, utilizing a 14 kg warhead module to offset the absence of a traction system. It can be launched from land, sea, or UAVs, achieving speeds of Mach 0.2 and a range of 40 kilometres at an altitude of 20,000 feet. The munition has a target arrival time of approximately 2 minutes.

The Akinci UAV is a high-altitude long-endurance (HALE) unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) being manufactured by the Turkish defence company Baykar.

Equipped with a Ukrainian AI-450C turboprop engine, it first appeared in the media in June 2018. It underwent its initial ground launch in August 2019 and completed engine testing by September 2019. The UAV, with a payload capacity of 1,350 kg and a maximum takeoff weight of 5.5 tonnes, made its maiden flight in December 2019.

The Akinci UAV, set to be the first capable of launching air-launched cruise missiles, is outfitted with AI for enhanced performance in adverse weather conditions. By early 2021, it was ready for mass production and has been in service with the Turkish Air Force since then.
