Iranian police officer killed in terrorist attack in Saravan
An Iranian police officer was killed and another was injured in a terrorist attack in Saravan, located in the southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan.
The attack occurred late on July 18, when gunmen in a Peugeot Pars vehicle launched a surprise assault on a patrol unit. The Sistan and Baluchestan Police’s information centre condemned the attack as "cowardly" and "brazen", Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
"Last night, the armed passengers of a Peugeot Pars vehicle cowardly committed a blind and brazen attack against a patrol unit of Saravan County’s police that resulted in the injury of two police forces," the police statement said.
The injured officers were immediately transported to medical facilities, but despite the best efforts of the medical staff, Captain Ali Motahari succumbed to his injuries. "Unfortunately, Captain Ali Motahari was martyred despite the medical staff’s efforts," the statement added.
Following the attack, police engaged in a clash with the militants and pursued them as they fled the scene. "Immediately after the attack, the police forces clashed with and chased the militants," the statement confirmed.
Authorities are conducting an ongoing search operation to apprehend those responsible for the attack. The police have emphasized that precautionary measures are being taken to protect civilians during the search. "The search operation for the perpetrators is underway, with strict measures in place to prevent harm to civilians," the police statement concluded.
