Georgia rejects calls to cut ties with Trump’s MAGA movement

Georgia will not become involved in what it describes as an ideological confrontation between Brussels and Washington, Georgian MP Levan Makhashvili said, responding to remarks by European Commissioner Marta Kos.

Kos had said that countries seeking European Union membership should not maintain ties with US President Donald Trump’s MAGA movement. Makhashvili criticised the position, arguing that Brussels was effectively treating the current US administration as an adversary in the context of EU enlargement, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media. 

According to the Georgian lawmaker, such an approach directly threatens Georgia’s interests and security.

“This is unacceptable and directly harms Georgia. Anyone who tells us that the path to the European Union requires severing ties with MAGA is asking us to turn our own security into a pawn in someone else’s internal ideological conflict,” Makhashvili said.

He added that Georgia would not interfere in what he described as an ideological dispute between Brussels and Washington, while rejecting any demand that Tbilisi distance itself from the Trump-aligned movement as a condition linked to its European aspirations.
