Islamabad looks to Beijing for greater role in in US-Iran deal
Pakistan is seeking a greater diplomatic role for China in efforts aimed at resolving tensions surrounding the conflict in Iran, with Islamabad reportedly hoping Beijing will participate directly in future negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
China has expressed readiness to work alongside Pakistan “to make a positive contribution to the early restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East,” Al Hadath reports.
The diplomatic developments come as Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks in Beijing on May 25 with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif amid intensified international efforts to bring an end to the war in Iran.
According to the report, Islamabad is advocating for Beijing to serve as a guarantor in any potential future agreement between the United States and Iran, underscoring Pakistan’s growing role in regional mediation efforts.
Sharif is currently visiting China alongside Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, who has been described by media outlets as one of the key figures involved in diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran.
