Israel agrees to resume Gaza truce talks next week

09 August 2024 19:27

In a move prompted by international pressure, Israel has agreed to resume ceasefire negotiations regarding Gaza next week.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office confirmed the talks, following intensive diplomatic efforts to prevent a broader regional conflict, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The announcement comes in the wake of Iranian accusations that Israel aims to escalate the conflict in the Middle East, alongside criticism from Hamas and other analysts who claim Netanyahu has extended the fighting in Gaza.

The Israeli military reported on Thursday that operations have resumed in Khan Yunis, a southern Gaza city previously vacated by Israeli troops after intense fighting with Hamas. The ongoing conflict has seen Israel return to previously contested areas as part of its campaign against the militant group.

Residents of Khan Yunis are enduring severe hardships, with many displaced multiple times. Ahmed al-Najjar, a local resident, voiced frustration over the continuous violence, pleading for an end to the suffering.

The recent escalation began with an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israel, leading to Iran-aligned groups’ involvement and increased fears of a regional war. The only previous truce occurred in November, allowing for temporary relief and exchanges between Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners.

Mediators from the United States, Qatar, and Egypt have been working to secure another ceasefire. They have proposed resuming talks on August 15, either in Doha or Cairo, to finalize a deal and address outstanding issues. Netanyahu's office has expressed readiness to engage in negotiations to implement the agreement.

The conflict, which started with Hamas's attack leading to significant casualties on both sides, has seen a recent setback with the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. This event, along with the killing of Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, has intensified regional tensions and complicated the truce efforts.

US President Joe Biden has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts, contacting Egyptian and Qatari leaders to facilitate the talks. Despite ongoing criticism and resistance from far-right factions within Netanyahu’s coalition, there is a concerted push to align with US interests and avoid further escalation.

As Israel continues its military operations in Gaza, including recent combat in Khan Yunis, the situation remains volatile. The US has increased its support to Israel while urging restraint from both Iran and Israel to prevent further regional conflict.
