Israel signals ongoing campaign against Hezbollah following Nasrallah's elimination
Israel will continue its operations beyond the elimination of Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary General of Hezbollah, as stated by IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.
“This is just the beginning; it's important to understand that we have additional capabilities to pursue our objectives,” Halevi affirmed, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He highlighted the IDF's “peak readiness” on all fronts and mentioned that the Israeli military is preparing for further decisive actions.
The operation to eliminate Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was named "New Order".
"This is just part of our toolkit. Let it be clear: anyone who threatens the citizens of Israel will be targeted. Whether in the north, the south, or even more distant areas, we will know how to reach them," Halevi said.
He emphasized that the operation to eliminate Nasrallah had been in preparation for a significant period, with the attack executed unexpectedly.
Earlier, the IDF reported Nasrallah's elimination in a missile strike on Beirut, claiming that Hezbollah's senior leadership was gathered at a headquarters located beneath an apartment building during the attack.
The IDF's official statement noted, “Yesterday, the IDF eliminated Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of the Hezbollah terrorist organization and one of its founders.” They also stated that the strike resulted in the deaths of Ali Karki, the commander of Hezbollah's southern front, along with other high-ranking members.
Some publications suggested that Nasrallah had ceased communication following the Israeli attack, while Iranian media asserted that he was not injured in the strike. The operation took place on September 27, targeting Hezbollah's main military headquarters in Beirut.
In a speech at the UN General Assembly on the same day, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized Israel's right to dismantle Hezbollah in order to ensure the safety of its citizens living near the Lebanese border. He posed a rhetorical question about how long the U.S. would tolerate similar threats if terrorists were to turn American border towns into ghost towns, stating that Israel has been “tolerating this intolerable situation for a year.”
Netanyahu decided to cut his trip short and return to Israel earlier than planned.
Meanwhile, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been transferred to a secure location inside the country with heightened security measures in place, two regional officials briefed by Tehran told US media.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated with a “pre-emptive military operation” launched by Israel in mid-September 2024, targeting the group, which is classified as a terrorist organization by Germany, the United States, and several other nations. Israeli airstrikes reportedly killed several leaders of Hezbollah, while the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported hundreds of casualties, including women and children, resulting from the strikes.
