Former Adviser Bolton warns Trump may abandon Ukraine after 50-day deadline
Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton has warned that President Donald Trump may seek to disengage from the conflict in Ukraine despite earlier promises to provide Kyiv with new military support.
In a recent article for The Wall Street Journal, Bolton wrote that while Trump has addressed Ukraine’s urgent requests for weapons, he is avoiding long-term commitments. Bolton cautioned that after a 50-day deadline, Trump might “wash his hands” of the conflict by finding reasons to take no further action against Russia.
Bolton highlighted that many Americans expecting robust support for Ukraine under Trump may be disappointed, as the president appears to be leaning toward isolationism rather than following traditional “peace through strength” policies associated with Ronald Reagan. Bolton noted that key figures close to Trump, including Vice President J.D. Vance and commentator Tucker Carlson, may prefer this more isolationist stance, but he warned that Ukraine’s American supporters should be wary of this approach.
Bolton, who served as national security adviser from 2018 to 2019 and as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations from 2005 to 2006, is the author of the memoir The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir.
