Death toll from South Korea's torrential rains rises to 19
Another fatality has been confirmed in the aftermath of last week’s torrential rains and landslides in South Korea, raising the official death toll to 19, the government announced on July 22.
According to preliminary data from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, nine people remain unaccounted for, bringing the total number of dead or missing due to the heavy rainfall between July 16 and 20 to 28, Caliber.Az reports via Yonhap.
The casualties include 10 deaths reported in Sancheong County in the south, three in Gapyeong County in the north, and two in the western city of Seosan. Four people are still missing in both Sancheong and Gapyeong, the ministry said.
Authorities have intensified recovery operations. As of July 22, emergency restoration work has been completed on approximately 2,976 of the 6,752 buildings and public facilities reported damaged during the disaster.
More than 14,000 residents were forced to evacuate due to the extreme weather, and 2,549 people remain in temporary shelters. Emergency crews and government agencies continue to work around the clock to restore access and services in the affected areas.
