Israeli fighter jets target key military sites in Syria with multiple airstrikes VIDEO
Israeli fighter jets conducted four rounds of 17 airstrikes this morning, targeting military positions linked to the former regime, as part of Israel's ongoing efforts to eliminate remaining military assets in Syria.
The airstrikes destroyed a scientific institution and a metal casting factory located near the scientific research centre in Barzeh, Rif Dimashq, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Additionally, the Israeli jets targeted the Al-Nasiriyah military airbase, situated 17 kilometres east of Al-Nabak city in northern Rif Dimashq.
The strikes also destroyed warehouses containing ballistic (Squad missiles) and advanced rocket launchers near Al-Qastal in the Qalamoun region of Rif Dimashq.
On the previous day, SOHR sources reported that Israeli jets carried out missile strikes on Qasyon Mountain in Damascus, Khalkhala Airport in Al-Suwayda countryside, and the defence and research facilities in Misyaf, located in the western Hama countryside. However, no casualties were reported.
These airstrikes followed similar raids on six military positions in Rif Dimashq and Al-Suwayda.
To recap, Israel has seized control of Mount Hermon’s summit, marking a significant shift in its military operations in Syria. The peak, strategically located at the border between Israel, Syria, and Lebanon, has long been a demilitarized zone, monitored by UN peacekeepers. Israeli troops now occupy the highest point in the region, which has been described as a vital military asset due to its commanding view of surrounding areas.
Efraim Inbar, director of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security (JISS), emphasized the strategic importance of the summit, saying, “There is no substitute for mountains.” The move follows Israel's extensive airstrikes against nearly 500 Syrian military targets, including the destruction of Syria’s navy and the neutralization of most of its surface-to-air missiles.
Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, highlighted the security significance of maintaining control over Mount Hermon, especially with winter conditions approaching. Despite claims from a Syrian activist group that Israeli forces have advanced toward Damascus, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have denied any such movement.
The Golan Heights, which borders Mount Hermon, has been under Israeli control since 1967, despite Syria’s unsuccessful attempt to reclaim the area in 1973. Israel formally annexed the Golan in 1981, a move not recognized internationally but supported by the US under the Trump administration.
