Italy will continue with Russian sanctions regardless of them being "painful" to Rome
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called anti-Russian sanctions “painful for the country”.
According to the Italian Prime Minister, despite the consequences of sanctions against Russia for Italy, the restrictions will accelerate the end to the crisis in Ukraine, Gazeta.Ru reported.
“We remain faithful to our obligations, including the sanctions regime such as the freezing of €345 million in funds and almost €2 billion relating to assets of sanctioned individuals”, Meloni said during her speech at the Italian Parliament.
As the prime minister added, sanctions against Russia have shown effectiveness.
“We believe that they had a fundamental role to accelerate the end of the conflict and lead to sustainable negotiations”, Meloni said.
On December 12 the heads of state of the G7 bloc held a video conference to discuss Ukrainian aid, ahead of an international conference held in Paris on December 13 aimed to gather money and materials for the country.
Prime Minister Meloni also commented on the Russian sanction package at the summit, which was her first G7 meeting, after the emergency one staged during the G20 in Bali.
"It is crucial to remain united in the G7's full support to Ukraine, including in the economic and military fields. We are called to continue to defend the country from the war of Russian aggression", said Prime Minister Meloni, as reported by Rai News.
