India considers acquisition of Russia’s S-500 missile defence system
India is reportedly exploring the possibility of acquiring Russia’s S-500 “Prometheus” air defence system to strengthen its capabilities against emerging aerial threats, particularly from China.
According to a report by Indian Defence News, the move is driven by growing concerns over China’s expanding arsenal of hypersonic glide vehicles, ballistic missiles, and stealth aircraft, Caliber.Az reports.
The S-500 represents a significant upgrade over the currently deployed S-400 system, with extended range, faster response time, and the ability to intercept a wide range of targets including hypersonic missiles, stealth aircraft, and even low Earth orbit satellites. It can engage threats at speeds up to Mach 7 and altitudes reaching 200 kilometers, offering broader coverage and early interception capabilities.
The report notes that the S-500 could enhance India’s ability to defend critical infrastructure by integrating with existing S-400 systems and indigenous missile defence projects such as Project Kusha and the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) programme. The system's rapid response time and advanced radar technology also allow for the simultaneous engagement of multiple high-speed threats.
Russia has reportedly offered India a joint production deal for the S-500, potentially involving technology transfer. However, high costs and possible downgrades in the export version remain important considerations.
