Trump bans imports of some Canadian alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles

09 September 2026 09:38

US President Donald Trump has ordered a ban on imports of certain Canadian motorcycles, dairy products and alcoholic beverages, escalating the ongoing trade dispute between Washington and Ottawa.

The executive order, published on the White House website, covers a range of Canadian products, including beer, wine, cider, whiskey, vodka and non-alcoholic beer, as well as molasses and whey. Motorcycles and mopeds with engine capacities above 800cc will also be barred from entering the United States. The restrictions are set to take effect on September 29.

US administration officials said the measures are a direct response to retaliatory tariffs imposed by Canada in opposition to Washington's trade policies, CBS reported.

The White House has also revised the list of Canadian goods subject to 50% tariffs. Cement, road salt and medical swaddling products have been removed from the list, while all-terrain vehicles, motorboats, golf carts and certain types of cheese have been added.

The latest measures follow the breakdown of several weeks of trade negotiations between the two countries. On August 22, Washington imposed 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods, further intensifying trade tensions.

Trump has also said the United States plans to raise tariffs on all Canadian automotive products, auto parts and steel to 50% starting January 1, 2027.
