Cuba hits back after Trump map places island under US flag

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said the island would never again become a colony of any empire, responding to a map posted by U.S. President Donald Trump on Truth Social that depicted Cuba and several other territories under the colours of the American flag.

“Cuba knows very well what it means to have been a colony and a neocolony of two empires,” Díaz-Canel wrote on X. He added that “the bloodshed for our independence, sovereignty and self-determination will not have been shed in vain.”

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez responded to Trump’s map with irony, saying the U.S. government would soon leave its own citizens geographically confused.

“The way things are going, the US government will leave its citizens geographically disoriented. Soon they will not know what gulf, lake, building, country, continent or planet they are in,” Rodríguez wrote on social media.

Trump published the world map on Monday without an accompanying explanation. The image showed the colours of the U.S. flag covering not only the United States but also Canada, Mexico, Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. The depiction prompted criticism from affected countries, with Iceland calling the publication inappropriate and summoning the U.S. ambassador.
