Trump hails AfD victory in Germany, blames immigration policies
09 September 2026 09:26
US President Donald Trump has described the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party’s victory in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt as a “really big night,” attributing the result to voter dissatisfaction with Germany’s immigration policies.
“They finally got tired of the absolutely horrible Immigration rules and regulations which have hurt Germany so badly,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The AfD secured a record 43.8% of the vote in the Saxony-Anhalt election, winning 39 of the 83 seats in the state parliament. The party fell three seats short of an absolute majority.
Germany’s governing Christian Democratic Union (CDU) received 17.2% of the vote.
