Kazakhstan adopts new law on territorial defence
President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has signed the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan "On the Territorial Defence of the Republic of Kazakhstan," according to a statement by the presidential office.
“The law provides legal regulation of public relations and establishes the organisational and legal foundations of state policy in the field of territorial defence of the Republic of Kazakhstan,” the statement from Kazakhstan's presidential office reads, Caliber.Az informs.
The law addresses material support for territorial defence and introduces state oversight in this area, granting the Ministry of Defence the appropriate functions.
The document aims to create an effective territorial defence system and ensure public safety during emergencies. It sets out principles of unified organisational approaches and adequate financing of related activities.
Notably, Kazakhstan has already gained practical experience in this regard during the COVID-19 pandemic, the response to the 2020 Sardoba dam breach, forest fire suppression in the Kostanay region in 2022, and flood recovery efforts in northwestern Kazakhstan in 2024.
