Tensions flare as France detains Algerian-leased ferry ahead of travel surge
Algerian–French relations have entered a fresh phase of diplomatic strain after French authorities detained a ferry leased by Algeria to accommodate a surge in summer travel demand, particularly from Algerians living in Europe.
The vessel in question, the El Venizelos, has a capacity of over 2,000 passengers and 750 vehicles and was scheduled to operate between Marseille and Algerian ports. However, just before its departure, the French Navy conducted a surprise inspection and reported “technical irregularities.” Based on the European Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control, the ferry was barred from setting sail, Caliber.Az reports via Watan.
Although French officials have refrained from linking the detention to any political agenda, the incident comes at a time of heightened diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
France and Algeria remain at odds over issues including migration policies, security cooperation, and the legacy of colonial rule.
The incident revives debates about the fragile nature of Algerian–French ties, and raises concerns over how far the diplomatic escalation could go in the coming period.
