Hungary’s ruling party nominates Baka András for presidency

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar has said his ruling Tisza party has officially nominated former Supreme Court President Baka András for the presidency.

In a post on Facebook, Magyar noted that the faction described the veteran jurist as the strongest choice to restore the dignity and unifying role of the presidency, Caliber.Az reports.

According to the PM, Baka has decades of experience in Hungarian and international law and served as Director General of the State Administration College from 1990 to 1998 and was a judge at the European Court of Human Rights from 1991 to 2008.

In 2009, Hungary’s Parliament elected him president of the Supreme Court.

"After the Fidesz-led government unlawfully removed him from office in 2011, he continued his work as a court judge. Today, he is nominated by the TISZA faction to head the Supreme Court.

Throughout his life, Dr. András Baka has been a prominent advocate for the unity of the Hungarian nation and has held positions of authority in law, judiciary, and constitutional law. He is a distinguished jurist and a prominent public figure with national recognition.

The TISZA faction has nominated ten candidates, including several outstanding experts and prominent figures in Hungarian public life, who are a guarantee of the unity of the Hungarian nation. The TISZA leadership has discussed ten candidates, and today, three of them have been nominated by the TISZA faction.

The faction decided to nominate Dr. András Baka as the President of Hungary through a secret ballot. The Parliament will vote on the candidate on August 11.

The faction agreed that Dr. András Baka's person is the strongest guarantee that the republican presidential institution will regain its true dignity and ability to unite the nation and be the enemy of the current majority. We are proud that for the first time since the regime change, the election of the head of state was not decided based on party affiliation or party candidates, but on the basis of a truly independent, non-partisan, with proven expertise in his field and life experience, we offer the nation a credible authority,” Magyar added.
