Trump rallies behind Infantino, warns FIFA against “terrible mistake”

US President Donald Trump voiced his support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, saying the organisation would make a “terrible mistake” if it considered replacing him.

In a Truth Social post, Trump praised Infantino’s performance at the helm of FIFA, particularly highlighting the success of the recently concluded World Cup, Caliber.Az reports.

“He is fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented. If he is gone, it will never be as successful or profitable again!” Trump wrote.

Following the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, Infantino posted a message urging critics of the tournament to meditate and pray. The tournament’s most high-profile controversy involved a delay in issuing a red card to US national team forward Folarin Balogun at Trump’s request. Infantino maintained that the decision by the disciplinary bodies was independent.

Shortly after the World Cup concluded, Infantino announced plans to sell part of FIFA’s rights to outside investors, prompting a negative reaction across the football community and threats to boycott the 2030 World Cup. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) was the first to raise the issue. Amid intense criticism, FIFA abandoned the plan.
