Axios: US-brokered deal clears way for nuclear materials to leave Syria

11 August 2026 09:51

Washington has reached an agreement with Damascus and Israeli authorities to have nuclear materials removed from a site in Syria by officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to sources cited by Axios, the IAEA “will soon remove nuclear material stored at a clandestine site in Syria.” The agreement was reached by US President Donald Trump’s administration with Syria and Israel following consultations.

Several “research-and-development and storage sites” linked to Syria’s nuclear program remained in the country after the strike and were “mostly inactive,” the report added. One of them contained “nuclear materials,” including uranium concentrate.

The sources stressed that Israel had been monitoring the site and demanded that the materials in question be removed. Israeli officials threatened to strike the facility.

The US administration reached an agreement with the Syrian authorities about three weeks ago under which IAEA personnel will remove the materials. The operation is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
