Libya’s eastern military intelligence chief killed in targeted car bombing

Maj. Gen. Fawzi al-Mansouri, head of the military intelligence department of Libya’s eastern-based forces led by Khalifa Haftar, was killed in a targeted attack in Benghazi on August 10, Libyan security officials said.

Preliminary reports indicate that an improvised explosive device had been planted in al-Mansouri’s vehicle, according to Libyan media and security sources.

The vehicle was near the Aisha Mosque in Benghazi when the explosion occurred. Sources cited by Al Arabiya also said an explosive device had been planted inside the car.

Security officials described the incident as a “terrorist act.”

Al-Mansouri had served as head of military intelligence for Haftar’s eastern-based forces since 2024. Before taking the post, he commanded forces in the Persian Gulf region and headed a military command post in Ajdabiya.

He was also regularly involved in military operations in southern Libya.
