US provides $15.5 million in emergency aid after deadly Colombia quake

The United States will provide $15.5 million in emergency assistance to Colombia following a powerful earthquake that killed at least 132 people and injured more than 480, the U.S. Department of State said.

The funding will support emergency shelter, food, protection services and earthquake assessments as Colombian authorities respond to the disaster and assess damage, Caliber.Az reports.

“Following today’s devastating 7.4 magnitude earthquake across various regions in Colombia, the Trump Administration is committing $15.5 million in funding for emergency shelter, food, protection, and earthquake assessments,” the State Department said on X.

The department added that the United States was standing with the Colombian people and supporting the government as it assesses needs in affected areas.

The earthquake struck on August 10 at a depth of about 103 kilometres in Chocó province, according to Colombia’s geological service. The magnitude 7.4 tremor was felt across a wide area of western Colombia.

At least 132 people were killed, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue teams search areas where people may be trapped beneath collapsed structures. More than 480 people were injured, according to an updated statement from Colombia’s Association of Capital Cities.
