Media: Germany, UK throw full support behind Türkiye’s Eurofighter deal
Germany and the United Kingdom have thrown their full support behind Türkiye’s bid to acquire Eurofighter Typhoon jets, effectively neutralising efforts by Greece to block the sale.
Türkiye is advancing rapidly in its national defence industry and has reached a critical stage in securing Eurofighter Typhoon jets to address urgent operational needs of its Air Force, Caliber.Az reports via German media.
Officials from Airbus Defence and Space’s Munich office - one of the Eurofighter manufacturers - highlight the significance of the prospective agreement with Türkiye.
The report emphasises that “Airbus needs Eurofighter export deals” to sustain the programme, and confirms that other project partners, including BAE Systems and Leonardo, have also endorsed the sale. Despite the broad support, Greece remains a vocal opponent.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reiterated his position during a joint press conference in Berlin on May 13, stressing that “conditions must be set when selling weapons” to ensure responsible arms transfers.
In contrast, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy voiced strong support for the transaction, stating, “We are making excellent progress on the potential export of Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft to Türkiye, and we are certain all four consortium partners support this sale.”
Lammy underscored Türkiye’s strategic location at the intersection of the Black Sea, Caucasus, Middle East, and Africa, describing Türkiye as “indispensable to the security interests of the UK, Europe, and beyond.”
