EU Commissioner: Moldova to fully abandon Russian gas by end of 2027

Moldova will have to completely stop using Russian gas by the end of 2027, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has stated.

At an investment forum in Chișinău, she said the country is already fully integrated into the European electricity market and that alternative energy sources already cover up to one-third of local energy consumption, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

As an EU candidate country, Moldova is obliged to align with the European Commission’s indefinite ban on EU member states purchasing Russian gas, which is expected to come into full force by the end of 2027.

Kos also pledged up to €1 billion in investments for Moldova through cooperation with the EU.

She noted strong EU interest in Moldova’s river transport routes as part of efforts to develop EU logistics corridors via the Black Sea and the South Caucasus to Central Asia, bypassing Russia.
