Azerbaijani official appointed to senior position in Ukrainian Armed Forces
Former Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Gunduz Mammadov, has been appointed to a new position within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to Ukrainian media.
The officer of the 59th Separate Assault Brigade named after Yakov Handziuk has been appointed Deputy Head of the Military Law Enforcement Service of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The decision was made by Ukraine’s Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
In his new role, Mammadov will head the Department for Documentation of Violations of the Laws and Customs of War, which will be responsible for recording and preserving evidence of alleged war crimes directly in the combat zone.
Mammadov is originally from Ganja, Azerbaijan. He spent many years working within Ukraine’s prosecutorial system. He served as Prosecutor of Odesa starting in July 2014 and later became Deputy Prosecutor of the Odesa region in December 2015.
On August 22, 2016, he was appointed Prosecutor of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea by the Ukrainian government.
From 2019 to 2021, Mammadov held the position of Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
