Americano coffee becomes “Canadiano” as US-Canada tensions brew VIDEO

The idea of renaming the familiar “Americano” coffee as “Canadiano” is gaining popularity in Canadian coffee shops, turning a simple change of wording into a symbolic response to the growing tensions between Canada and the United States.

The change applies only to the drink’s name, with its recipe remaining exactly the same.

The move comes against the backdrop of a broader deterioration in relations between the two neighbouring countries, with tensions escalating in recent months over trade, sovereignty and national identity. 

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to Canada as a potential “51st state,” remarks that have drawn strong criticism from Canadian officials and the public.

The dispute has since extended beyond political rhetoric, with Washington and Ottawa imposing tariffs and countermeasures as both sides have struggled to reach a new trade arrangement. 

At the same time, Trump’s push to rename geographical landmarks, including his reference to Lake Ontario as “Lake America,” has added a symbolic dimension to the tensions, prompting renewed debate in Canada over the country’s sovereignty and distinct national identity.

Canadian authorities have responded by emphasising economic independence and encouraging consumers and businesses to reduce their reliance on US goods and brands.
