Iran urges US to honour Islamabad memorandum commitments

08 September 2026 15:01

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the US to return to its commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, saying this could help normalise the situation in the Middle East.

According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, Araghchi made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, Russian media reports.

“The solution is simple. A return by the US side to fulfilling its commitments and honouring its signature on the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding would create the conditions for a return to normality,” the ministry quoted him as saying.

Araghchi also briefed his Japanese counterpart on the latest stages of talks between Iran and Oman over the Strait of Hormuz.

He said significant progress had been made in consultations on establishing a temporary route for vessels to pass through the strait.
