Egypt pushes 60-fay Gaza ceasefire in coordination with US, Qatar

30 June 2025 10:14

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has announced that Cairo is advancing a new proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, aiming to secure a 60-day truce in exchange for the release of Israeli hostages and the accelerated delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave.

In a televised interview with an Egyptian TV channel, Abdelatty said the proposal—developed jointly by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States—represents “a first step” toward achieving a permanent ceasefire and ending the conflict, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

“We’re working toward a durable solution and a permanent ceasefire,” he stated. “What’s on the table now is a 60-day truce in exchange for the release of a number of Israeli hostages and the swift delivery of aid to Gaza, including medical supplies.”

The minister emphasised that the current proposal is designed to create momentum toward a lasting cessation of hostilities, building on the initial agreement brokered on January 19 by Egypt, Qatar, and the US. That deal outlined a three-phase roadmap toward ending the war.

“This is only a first step,” Abdelatty noted, underscoring the need for a second phase that would involve a permanent end to the fighting. “There is an American vision and understanding of the importance of including guarantees in any upcoming agreement to ensure the sustainability of a ceasefire.”

He warned that any renewed Israeli military action would pose a serious threat to regional stability.

The ongoing negotiations come as humanitarian conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate under months of blockade and bombardment. The proposed ceasefire aims not only to halt the violence temporarily but also to pave the way for a broader diplomatic resolution.
