Japan moves to strengthen national security against foreign influence
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called for stronger measures to counter foreign influence in the country, including a new law to combat espionage and the introduction of a system to register foreign agents.
Speaking at a session of the Upper House Budget Committee, Takaichi said the proposals aim to protect Japan from operations by foreign powers that could threaten the nation’s stability and democratic institutions, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
“Even during my campaign for the leadership of the Liberal Democratic Party, I advocated for a law to prevent espionage,” she said.
The prime minister emphasised that the proposed measures are not only a matter of national security but also concern the economy. “We intend to ensure the stability of Japanese society and respond to various challenges that undermine democracy. This also concerns the economy, so I would like to consider measures to protect Japan, including a foreign agents registration system,” Takaichi added.
