Kallas: Azerbaijan “valued and reliable energy partner” for EU
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas has underlined Azerbaijan’s role as a “valued and reliable energy partner” for the European Union during a visit to Baku.
Speaking in the Azerbaijani capital, Kallas said there was “clear scope to deepen our cooperation, particularly on trade, transport and digital,” adding that “strengthening connectivity between the EU, the South Caucasus, and Central Asia is in our shared strategic interest,” Caliber.Az reports, citing the Delegation of the EU to Azerbaijan.
She also indicated openness to a more formalised framework for ties with Baku, noting that “we’re open to discuss a more structured partnership with Azerbaijan.”
At the same time, Kallas stressed that human rights remain a central component of the relationship, stating: “Of course, open and candid dialogue on human rights remains an integral part of our engagement.”
Turning to regional developments, she described progress in the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process as a significant opportunity, saying: “The progress on the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia represents a historic opportunity, and it’s important to sustain momentum.”
She added that the EU is prepared to support the process through multiple instruments, including confidence-building measures and demining efforts, noting that the bloc is already “the biggest donor” in demining assistance.
