Kazakhstan approves Turkish military transit through its airspace
Kazakhstan has approved the transit of Turkish military equipment and personnel through its airspace, the lower house of parliament, the Mazhilis, confirmed in a plenary session.
Deputy Minister of Defence Askar Mustabekov said that Turkish military aircraft and cargo will now be able to fly over Kazakhstan, but only with prior authorisation. Transit can be granted either through an annual permit or a one-off permit for a specific flight, Caliber.Az reports via Kazakh media.
Mustabekov explained that each state retains the right to refuse, suspend, or revoke any permit issued. He added that Kazakhstan reserves the right to halt military transit at any time if it deems it unsafe.
Before granting permission, authorities will review details such as the type of aircraft, the cargo being transported, its tonnage, and the number of military personnel on board to ensure compliance with regulations.
Some members of parliament raised concerns over the lack of clearly defined deadlines in the legislation. Mustabekov responded that the government would act as quickly as possible in the event of a refusal, but no specific timeframe is stipulated.
He also emphasised that the agreement will not require additional budget expenditure while expanding Kazakhstan’s capacity to participate in international operations, including peacekeeping missions.
