Kyrgyzstan detects first cases of metapneumovirus
Two cases of infection with the metapneumovirus were detected in Kyrgyzstan in late 2024.
The Kyrgyz Health Ministry highlighted that the recently discovered virus has attracted special attention, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Known as human metapneumovirus (HMPV), it causes acute respiratory viral infections, particularly in children under five and the elderly. The virus was first identified in 2001. The ministry stated that it is conducting vigilant epidemiological surveillance of severe acute respiratory infections, with collected samples being sent for testing.
From the 40-th to 52nd week of 2024, 1,144 samples were taken in Kyrgyzstan, with two cases linked to metapneumovirus. Doctors emphasised that this is not a new virus. The infection is primarily transmitted through airborne droplets, although it can also spread through direct contact. The incubation period typically lasts 3-5 days.
Earlier, the Kazakh Health Ministry noted that more than 30 cases of metapneumovirus infection have been revealed since the beginning of the epidemic season. Since the beginning of the epidemiological season in October 2024, more than two million cases of acute respiratory viral infection (ARVI) have been revealed. A mysterious illness causing flu-like symptoms and overwhelming hospitals in China has reportedly reached the UK, sparking concerns among health experts and the public alike.
The disease, identified as human metapneumovirus (hMPV), is said to cause symptoms resembling a mild cold but has been linked to severe respiratory conditions in some cases. Reports from China describe overcrowded hospitals, particularly those treating children with symptoms such as fever, persistent coughs, and sore throats.
