Lukashenko says nuclear weapons in Belarus serve as security shield
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said that the international community is aware that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons to defend its ally, making the remarks in an interview with RT.
Lukashenko emphasised that he communicates with people close to US President Donald Trump and, based on these contacts, believes the United States does not intend to attack Belarus, Caliber.Az reports per Belarusian media.
“Even if the Americans want to go to war with us… then they will be fighting on the territory of the Baltic states, Poland and so on. So, what do you think, why would I bring tactical nuclear weapons here and stir up the whole world and scare someone? No, this is a factor of our protection, our security,” he said.
According to Lukashenko, Belarus is Russia’s closest ally, and losing such a partnership would be unacceptable for Moscow. “We are legally bound to each other, and Russia has clearly stated that it will use its entire arsenal of weapons to defend Belarus. The whole world knows this,” the president noted.
He also urged the United States to reach an agreement with Vladimir Putin and honor its commitments, stressing that he views negotiations with Western countries pragmatically — as a tool rather than political rapprochement. Lukashenko added that he is not conducting dialogue with the US against Russia and China and strictly adheres to obligations under the Union State treaty.
Since 2023, Russian nuclear weapons have been deployed on Belarusian territory. Lukashenko has previously stated that the country would use them in the event of an attack.
